(Madras) : Admission to M.Tech
of Technology program is offered by all the Engineering
Departments. The Departments of Mathematics and Physics
also run an M.Tech programme. The M.Tech programme is
four semester duration and is entirely coursework oriented
except for a project during the fourth semester.
Eligibility criteria for admission to the program may
vary across departments, in respect of the qualifying

Admissions for select groups of students under various
Program Admissions are offered to the
candidates working in the Industry,Defence Research Establishment,
Officers from the Armed forces under different schemes of
Candidates sponsered by the industry are selected as the basis of an entrance
test and interview conducted by each department. Sponsored candidates receive
their normal salaries from their employee during their period of study.
Candidates from the Defence Research Laboratories and the armed force are selected
through a nationaly administered process. Sponsored candidates are not required
to qualify through GATE.
Quality Improvement Program Teachers in engineering institutions
get opportunities to study at IIT under the quality improvement
program (QIP).The QIP selections are made centrally and announcement
for applications are made each year. Teachers will have to
send in their applications through their institutions. The
list of applications qualifying for interview / test is drawn
up centrally on our all india basis and the teachers will
be interviewed at the IIT of choice indicated by them. Qualification
in GATE is not a pre condition for selection. Teachers continue
to remain as employers of their college during the period
of study at IIT. The FIP (Faculty Improvement Program) are
similar to QIP but apply to teachers in private engineering
Sponsored Programs Sponsored programs apply to employees
of the industry and research institutions recognized by the
government as organizations involved with Research and Development.
Students admitted to M.Tech under the sponsored programs qualify on the basis
of an entrance test and an interview. The organizations sponsoring candidates
must necessarily agree to pay them their salaries during the three semesters
of study at IIT. GATE qualification is generally not required for admission
under this scheme. The selection of candidates within their organization may
be subject to the need for higher degree and / or seniority within the organization.
The departments may admit between three and five candidates under this scheme
User Oriented Program The departments at IIT may be approched
by the industry and some commercial establishments for specialized
programs for specific groups of employees to keep them abreast
of the latest developements in the field.
The candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria as prescribed by
the concerned department, from time to time will be called for a Test
/ interview by the respective department. Selection will be based on
the previous academic performance and marks secured in the Test / interview.
Minimum Academic Qualifications Required for Admission
Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent with valid
GATE score OR Master's degree in appropriate Sciences / Humanities
and Social Sciences subjects.
The Institute require a first class or a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent
(CGPA 6.5) with a valid GATE score or NET (UGC / CSIR) Fellowship from
the current year in relevant areas.
NOTE : Candidates with background and qualifications in allied Engineering
subjects other than those specifically mentioned above may also be considered
for admission to M.S programme with the recommendation of the concerned
department and with the approval of the Senate.
Candidate Categories / Rules & eligibility criteria :
Associate Membership Candidates
Candidates having Associate Membership of the following professional
bodies will also be considered for admission to the M.S programme for
their parent discipline provided they are qualified in GATE and have
passed both Part A and B in first class or 60% marks :
The Institution of Engineers ( India )
The Aeronautical Society of India
The Indian Institute of Metals
The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers
The Indian Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication
Assistantship for Regular( full-time ) Scholars :
Half time Teaching / Research Assistantship (HART) may be awarded to Regular
(full-time) scholars admitted to M.S programmes. They should work for 8 hours
per week in the departments to earn this assistantship. Renewal of assistantship
of the scholar will be contingent on satisfactory progress in research work
and good performance during the preceding semester in the discharge of responsibility
as teaching / research assistant.
The rate of assistantship is Rs 5,000/- pm for the M.S programme. After 2 years,
the HTRA of this amount will be enhanced to Rs 5,600/- pm for the Engineering
and Science / Humanities scholars respectively based on satisfactory progress
of their research work and recommended by the doctoral committee.
In addition to the Institute HTRA, other fellowships are also available. Candidates
may be considered for award of these Fellowships subject to fulfilling certain
Admission without Assistantship :
Candidates may be considered for admission
to M.S programme without assistantship also. The eligible qualifications are
same as those of Regular (full-time) HTRA candidates. Candidates have to enclose
a letter along with the Application Form stating that they may be considered
for admission even without assistantship
Candidates working in Sponsored Research and
Consultancy Projects in Departments / Centres of this Institute as Project
Staff / aspiring for appointment in projects may also apply for M.S programme.
The minimum qualifications needed are :
Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent with valid GATE
score Master's degree in appropriate Sciences / Humanities and Social Sciences
subjects with first class or minimum 60% marks or equivalent (CGPA 6.5) with
a valid GATE score or NET (UGC/ CSIR) Fellowship tenable from the current year
in the relevant areas.
M.S Sponsored Scheme :
Candidates from Engineering
Colleges recognized by AICTE and from DST recognized R & D Institutions
of following categories are eligible to apply for admission to
M.S ( Sponsored ) full-time
Laboratories run by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research
/ Department of Atomic Energy / Department of Space etc.Public Sector
R & D units. Private Industries recognized by Department of Science and
Technology ( DST )as engaged in R & D work or contributing to R &D
efforts. A copy of the certificate by the DST in this regard will be required
to be produced in such cases. Medical Industry, Institutions and Hospitals
with approved R & D in the relevant area. ( A copy of the certificate issued
by the appropriate authority to be produced )
Candidates applying for M.S Industrial Management programme in addition to
having above qualification and experience should be employed in an organization
coming under anyone of the following categories of organization :
Small Scale Industry whose capital in Plant and Machinery (excluding building)
does not exceed Rs 15 lakhs and registered with the Director General of Technical
Development (DGTD) ( evidence to be produced by the candidate ).
Medium scale Industry registered with DGTD whose fixed assets are above Rs
15 lakhs but below Rs 2 crores.(evidence to be produced by the candidate)
Large Scale Industry registered with DGTD whose fixed assets exceed Rs 2 crores.
( evidence to be produced by the candidate )
GATE score is not required for B.E/B.Tech candidates. AMIE candidates should
have a valid GATE score.
Candidates applying under this scheme should have a minimum 2 years professional
experience after graduation in the sponsoring organization / Institution and
having the minimum academic qualifications.
Concession to SC / ST Candidates :
reserved for SC / ST candidates as per the GOI (Govt. Of India ) rules.
They are also eligible for relaxation
upto 5% marks in the qualifying examination.
International Students :
Candidates of foreign
nationality holding Degrees from Indian Universities seeking admission
to M.S programme need the
necessary clearance from the Government of India in the Ministry
of Human Resource Development and should possess valid Research Visa.
be treated on par with Indian nationals for purposes of admission
to the Institute.
Candidates of foreign nationality with Degrees from Foreign Universities seeking
admission to the Institute will be treated differently and the case of each
candidate will be examined and decided purely on merit. They should fulfil
the eligible qualification requirement as applicable to regular students in
addition to GRE and TOEFL requirements. However, they are exempted from interview
and pre-interview qualifications.

If a candidate desires to apply for admission to more than one department,
he/she should use separate application form for each. They should indicate
clearly the Department and Area of Research in the space provided in
